Becoming a foster (resource) parent in Alaska means providing a safe home to a child in the care of the Office of Children's Services. First-aid and CPR training is part of the caregiver training expected of licensed families and is commonly required before or soon after licensing.
The first-aid requirement
In Alaska, a licensed foster family completes training tied to the needs of the children in the home through an Individualized Training Plan developed with the licensing worker, and first-aid and CPR from a recognized organization is a standard part of that plan. Training must be completed within the licensing year to remain in compliance.
The requirement is administered by the Alaska Office of Children's Services (OCS), with training support from the Alaska Center for Resource Families. The certificate should be kept current and is one requirement in addition to the home study and the assessment of the family's suitability to foster.
How to meet it
A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
